Because spas- modic dysphonia represents a complex of symptoms rather than a specific diag- nosis, the disorder can be difficult to identify empirically.123 Symptoms may begin gradually, progress over a period of a few months to a few years, and then plateau.
There are two principle types of spas- modic dysphonia: adductor and abduc- tor.
Mixed Adductor and Abductor Spas- modic Dysphonia.
The perceptual difference between the conditions is evident during sustained vowels: spas- modic dysphonia will sound nearly nor- mal during vowel prolongations, except for brief intermittent spasms; essential vocal tremor will produce consistent rhythmic modulations.128 In addition to the persistent perceptual features, the laryngeal tremor is visible during sus- tained phonation during the laryngeal examination.
